Former IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury feels that his win over Wladimir Klitschko has ruined he legacy of the 40-year-old former world champion. Fury is blaming himself for Wladimir’s legacy being tarnished after his 12 round unanimous decision win over him in November 2015 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Wladimir looked like an old man in losing that fight. The scores were close, but Wladimir looked like an over-the-hill fight compared to years earlier. Fury looked pretty much just as bad, but he was never a great talent to begin with. It wasn’t surprising for Fury to look bad, because he’s always been a flawed fighter.
“I feel like I’ve ruined Wladimir Klitschko’s legacy and it’s not fair to judge him vs. me,” said Fury. “I’m an awkward mofo. Ask me anybody.”
We can’t know for sure whether it was Fury that made Wladimir look bad or if this is something that would have happened with him fighting anybody. Wladimir looked terrible in his 12 round decision win over Bryant Jennings in April 2015.
Wladimir wasn’t able to land his right hands in that fight. He was missing almost every right hand he would throw, and Jennings would counter him immediately. Wladimir won the fight based on his superior jab, which was working well for him against the shorter 6’3” Jennings. It was sad to see Wladimir no longer having the accuracy to land his right hands and left hooks against a fighter that was there to be hit.
I don’t think you can give Fury the credit for the way Wladimir looked in the fight. I think it’s just a case of Wladimir getting old, and losing his hand-eye coordination the way that some older fighters do.
Fury also says he’s changing his name to Gorga Tys. It sounds like a put on by Fury, but you never know with him.
Here’s what Fury said on his social media site:
“I just feel like I’m not a Gypsy,” said Tyson Fury. “I don’t have the same beliefs as the gypsy culture. I denounce and I am a gypsy any longer. I am no longer being a gypsy. From now on call me Gorga Tys. 2017, new beginning.”
