Manny Pacquiao says a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is possible if he returns to boxing in the future. Pacquiao, 38, wants a second chance at Mayweather to clear up what he feels was a controversial 12 round decision loss to the American star in 2015. Pacquiao thought he had done enough to win the fight. The judges had Mayweather the winner by the scores: 116-112, 118-110, and 116-112.
A rematch between Pacquiao and Mayweather will need to happen soon for it to be worth anything. Mayweather hasn’t fought since his win over Andre Berto in September 2015, and he’s now been out of the ring for 15 months. That’s a long time, but the boxing public still seems interested in Mayweather news, so it’s still not too late for him to make a ring return for a second fight against Pacquiao.
Pacquiao said this to hoylosangeles.com about a rematch against Mayweather:
“If (Floyd Mayweather Jr.) comes back to boxing there is a possibility, but right now we’re not talking about it or thinking about it,” said Pacquiao. “If (Floyd Mayweather Jr.) boxed again there is a possibility (of rematch). Actually, we’re not even negotiating or thinking about my next fight because of how busy I’m working in my office as a senator. Right now I’m focused on that,” said Pacquiao.
Pacquiao has won two fights since his loss to Mayweather in beating Tim Bradley and WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas. Pacquiao retired after his win over Bradley last April. However, he came out of retirement to defeat Vargas by a 12 round unanimous decision last November.
Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum wants him to fight twice in 2017. The potential names are Jeff Horn and Vasyl Lomachenko. The fight against Horn is more likely than the Lomachenko match. As always, unbeaten WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford is someone Arum would like to match against Pacquiao very badly, but it doesn’t look like that fight is going to happen in 2017 if ever. If Pacquiao fights Horn, it would be in the second half of 2017.
Mayweather seems satisfied with the money that he’s made from his boxing career, and he does not seem interested in resuming his career despite the ability to make a lot of money in a rematch with Pacquiao. Some boxing fans believe that Mayweather is afraid to fight a healthy Pacquiao, as the Filipino star had an injured right shoulder that limited him in his fight last year.
