With Lucas Matthysse now out of the equation for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight in February or April 2016, Amir Khan now finds himself in a strong position to be the guy that ends up inside the ring with the Filipino fighter in early 2016.
Khan has already started talking mucho trash about Pacquiao, and he how he thinks he can beat him and then use the win to get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr next year. Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune isn’t buying it. He doesn’t give Khan any chance of beating Pacquiao now that he’s with trainer Virgil Hunter.
Fortune thought Khan was a better fighter when he was with Freddie Roach in a couple of years ago. Now that he’s with Hunter, Fortune thinks his game has gone downhill. However, Khan is still unbeaten with Hunter despite Fortune’s perceptions, but he’s also not faced anyone good yet.
“Listen, when Khan was in London with his people in London, he was good,” Fortune said to esnewsreporting.com. “When he went with Freddie, he was much, much better. Now he’s up North with Virgil Hunter. Personally, I think he’s a wuss. I think Manny [expletive] knocks Khan out. Khan is fast and he’s strong but he can box his ass off too, but so can Manny. He was better when he was with Freddie, way better,” Fortune said.
If Khan was better with Freddie it’s because he was younger back then. Khan is now 28, and married and traveling around the world on constant trips to places like Pakistan. He’s a very busy person and I think the money may have had an effect on his game, because he definitely doesn’t look as good as he was when he was 26. It also could be that Khan is slowing down a little. He’s moved up in weight to welterweight, and packed on a lot of muscle. All the strength training that he’s done has probably slowed him down.
