In an expletive laden press conference on Wednesday, Angel Garcia, the trainer/father for WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia, needed to be separated from WBA 147lb champion Keith Thurman after the two of them had some harsh words. Thurman was up at the podium talking about his March 4 fight against Garcia when Angel started to really tear into him, using the N-word on more than one occasion. T
his was the kick-off press conference for the Garcia-Thurman fight today, and it was pretty wild. Angel was talking so much trash that he appeared to lose his voice. It was cracking really badly by the time he stopped talking.
Garcia and Thurman will be fighting each other on Showtime on CBS at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The venue for the fight was announced today. It’s a good location for this fight, as both guys are from the East Coast section of the U.S. New York was only place that made sense for this fight.
It’s a good thing that Angel Garcia didn’t get to the 28-year-old Thurman, because it would have been bad if there had been violence. When you’re dealing with an aging training trainer like Angel Garcia and a fighter in his prime like Thurman, it’s not a fair fight. It’s senseless. It wasn’t Thurman who was going after Angel. It was the other way around. Angel wanted a part of Thurman.
I guess he didn’t like the way that Thurman was trashing Danny Garcia. I don’t know what Angel was expecting Thurman to say about Danny. Of course, he was going to let the boxing media know what his thoughts are about him, because that’s what press conferences are for. Thurman doesn’t think too highly of Garcia, and neither does a lot of boxing fans. They see him as a paper champion, who got lucky when the World Boxing Council let him fight for the vacant WBA 147lb title against Robert Guerrero instead of a good welterweight.
“He’s going to [expletive] you up,” Ange Garcial said to Thurman. “Don’t tell me to be quiet. I’m a grown man. I’ll jack you up.”
“I’m going to put his son to sleep,” Thurman said. “We’ll see how he talks when his son is lying on the blue mat.”
