IBF 154lb champion Jermall Charlo is ready to fight WBO junior middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez in a unification match. Charlo beat Julian Williams last Saturday night in winning a 5th round knockout in front of a large crowd at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles, California.
There’s not much left for Charlo to fight in the division other than Canelo or Demetrius Andrade. Getting the Canelo fight would be a huge positive for Charlo’s career, as it would show the boxing world how good he is if he were able to take the red-haired Mexican fighter’s scalp.

Williams gave a good account of himself against Charlo at times, but he still ended up getting put on the canvas three times in the fight. Two of the knockdowns game in round 5 and one in round 2. The fight was stopped after the second knockdown in the 5th.
“I want to unify, the WBO with Canelo [Alvarez], the WBC or WBA. Where are you [Canelo]? I want to prove I’m the best junior middleweight in the world,” Charlo said. “None of them are on my level. I’ve worked very hard throughout my career. I haven’t been given anything.”
In an ideal world, Canelo accepts the challenge by Charlo and faces him in early 2017 to prove to the boxing world that he’s capable of beating more than just Liam Smith and Amir Khan. A fight against Charlo would give Canelo a chance to show that he can beat a true top fighter with talent, speed and punching power. It would be a difficult fight for Canelo that he could well lose, but at least he would get the opportunity to prove that he’s not just a pampered and well protected fighter with a padded record.
Charlo is quickly showing that he’s one of the most dangerous punchers in the sport. It wasn’t just his TKO win over Julian Williams that is making news. It’s Charlo’s wins over Austin Trout and Cornelius Bundrage that are opening the eyes of fans everywhere. Charlo is a fighter that could become the next big star of the sport with the right fights and the right wins. It would be helpful if Canelo were to fight him so that he could prove how good he is to the fans. If nothing else, Canelo would prove that he’s worthy of being a world champion at 154, because a lot of fans believe that his recent win over Liam Smith was little more than a victory over a paper champion.
