Danny Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) is going to be getting more than 25% of the revenue for his fight against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) on March 18 on HBO PPV. Jacobs would have received a 75/25 split of the money for the GGG fight if it had gone to a purse bid this week on Monday.
Jacobs’ manager Al Haymon worked out a deal that will be giving him more than the 25% the World Boxing Association had mandated for the fight. Just how much more than 25% is anyone’s guess? Jacobs wanted 40% of the revenue, which is a pretty big cut of the revenue for a fighter who hasn’t shown the ability to anything more than a regional fighter in the U.S when it comes to drawing fans.
The 29-year-old Jacobs is mainly popular in the East Coast, whereas Golovkin is popular on both coasts in the U.S. Golovkin also brings in higher ratings on cable than Jacobs. If Golovkin’s manager Tom Loeffler gave Jacobs a 40% cut of the money, they would be overvaluing what he brings to the table. Loeffler obviously wanted to make the fight happen, but he would be doing a bad deal for Golovkin if he gave Jacobs 40 percent of the money for the fight.
“Although terms of the March fight were not disclosed, Jacobs certainly will get a much bigger slice of the pie than 25 percent by making a deal, but the fight will stay with HBO, which has Golovkin under exclusive contract,” said Dan Rafael of ESPN.com.
It might have been better for Golovkin to have let the fight go to a purse bid. He could have gotten a 75/25 split of the money for the fight. The main problem with that is it would require that Loeffler win the purse bid to avoid Jacob’s manager Al Haymon winning the bid and sticking the fight on Showtime Boxing and at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Having the Golovkin-Jacobs figt on Showtime might have been a deal breaker that would have finished the fight.
The Golovkin-Jacobs fight will be taking place at Madison Square Garden in New York.
This is not the fight that the boxing fans want to see. The fans want to see Golovkin fight Saul Canelo Alvarez. Jacobs is not the guy that the fans have been pushing for to be Golovkin’s opponent in 2017.
“It’s big news for me. I am very excited,” Golovkin said. “I think it’s a very big fight and great fight for you guys to watch.”
If Golovkin can look impressive against Jacobs in beating him, then the boxing community will be happy about the fight. However, if Golovkin loses or is made to look bad, it’s going to hurt the interest in a fight between Golovkin and Canelo.
