Top Rank promoter Bob Arum apparently doesn’t believe that a fight between UFC star Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a possible one. The two fighters have been going back and forth in egging each other on in talking about a potential fight between them for many months now.
It’s reached the point of it being a joke in the minds of boxing and MMA fans, and yet the fighters are still going at it. The results of their back and forth trash talking seems to be working against them both, as they’re crying wolf too much and starting to not be taken seriously.
Arum told MZ.com that the Mayweather-McGregor fight talk is “absolute nonsense.”
What’s funny about the whole thing is that McGregor’s UFC boss Dana White is even joining in with the talk of a fight between Mayweather and McGregor. There are reports that White offered Mayweather $25 million for the fight with the 28-year-old McGregor. That offer was laughed at by Mayweather, who has said repeatedly that his asking price is a cool $100 million for the fight.
Sadly, that’s the only fight that Mayweather is interested in. He has no interest in coming back to boxing and taking on one of the top fighters like Manny Pacquiao, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, Keith Thurman or Terence Crawford. Some boxing fans think Mayweather is afraid to return to the ring, because he would be pressured to face a good opponent and he might lose, because he’s been gone for so long since his last fight in 2015.
The good news about the back and forth talk of a fight between Mayweather and McGregor is that very soon it won’t be worthy of discussion. Mayweather is turning 40 this month, and with each passing month, he becomes more and more irrelevant. Mayweather can certainly keep talking about wanting to fight MMA fighters, but it’s going to be soon treated as old news, because he’s not an active fighter any longer. He’s from the past.
