Former WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-3-1, 24 KOs) took a look at some of the recent sparring video of UFC champion Conor McGregor on the internet, and he wasn’t impressed with his boxing skills. Lee says he doesn’t see McGregor as a “top level” fighter in terms of boxing skills.
McGregor, 28, has been calling out superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a fight between them, but with no luck. Mayweather Jr. is retired, and he’s not been particularly interested in that fight. Mayweather did mention the possibility of fighting McGregor earlier this year, but something seems to have cooled his interest.
One possibility is McGregor needing permission from the UFC before he could fight in another sport like boxing, and that’s unlikely that they’ll give him permission. The other thing that would likely keep Mayweather and McGregor from fighting is McGregor wanting a 50-50 split of the revenue. That’s not going to work against Mayweather. You can argue that the only way Mayweather agrees to a fight against anybody is if he gets the larger split of the money.
Lee said this to Newstalk.com about his thoughts on McGregor’s skills inside the boxing ring:
“Out of interest, when he’s posted a video of himself sparring, I’ve watched it, and to me, technically, it’s not a top level, it’s not up to scratch,” said Lee about McGregor. “He can fight; he’s good with his hands. But in terms of boxing, it would be interesting to see if he could win an Irish professional title. That wouldn’t be the highest standard in the world, but it would be an interesting level. I don’t see him as a top level boxer in any way, but in terms of the UFC, he probably is because the level wouldn’t be so high.”
Lee and McGregor are both from Ireland. Lee, 32, respects what McGregor has done in winning titles in the UFC. Lee also likes McGregor’s stand up fighting skills, but he notes that he’s doing it against guys that have limited skills in that area of fighting. Lee sees it being a much different story if McGregor were to fight inside the boxing ring.
Lee sees McGregor as standing no chance against Mayweather. Lee does see a fight between McGregor and Mayweather being a highly successful one that makes a ton of money. But he sees only one winner in that fight and that’s Mayweather.
It’s doubtful that McGregor will ever get a fight against Mayweather.
