Former WBA junior middleweight champion Sergio “Latin Snake” Mora believes that IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Andre “SOG” Ward beats middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin right now if the two fighters face each other. Mora was impressed with Ward’s recent 12 round unanimous decision win over light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev on November 19 last month on HBO pay-per-view. Mora, 36, thinks Ward won the fight against Kovalev by one or two rounds. He also thinks it could have been scored a draw.
As for the Golovkin vs. Ward fight, Mora believes that Golovkin would take the fight against Ward if it were up to him, but it’s not. Mora sees Golovkin’s management keeping him away from Ward, and he understands that. Mora sees it as a bad time for Golovkin to fight the 32-year-old Ward.
There’s not a whole lot of interest in a fight between Golovkin and Ward right now in the boxing world.
Ward didn’t really impress with his win over Kovalev at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The hardcore boxing fans loved Ward’s technical inside wrestling/mauling, but the fans that like pure action were less enthused. Since the majority of the fans prefer to see action, the minority have been drowned out. The minority in this are the fans that loved watching Ward wrestle Kovalev rather than fighting him. For that reason, Mora’s opinion about Ward beating Kovalev is pretty much useless. The fans that like action, thought Ward lost to Kovalev. In boxing the boxing world, majority rules unfortunately. As such, Ward lost the fight to Kovalev in the opinion of many.
Mora said this to ighthype.com about Ward, Golovkin and Kovalev:
“I think Ward is pound-for-pound the best fighter right now,” said Mora. “Maybe Chocolatito and Ward No.2. I think Ward beats Golovkin. After he beat Kovalev convincingly after getting hurt, I don’t see Golovkin doing anything else. So I think Ward has the upper hand, and that’s the reason Golovkin won’t want to get in the ring with Ward right now. His management [doesn’t want Golovkin to fight Ward]. I don’t think Triple G is avoiding anybody. He’ll fight King Kong at Skull Island. That guys a killer, but I think his management. He has a marketing team behind him. All of these people are taking care of him. So Golovkin, it’s smart for him not to go after Ward right now,” said Mora.
I don’t know if Ward can beat Golovkin. I think Ward would do a good job of tying Golovkin up to prevent him from throwing shots on the inside, but I don’t know if he could beat him in the classical sense in terms of boxing results.
“Ward won this fight I think by one round,” said Mora about the Ward vs. Kovalev fight. “Maybe it could’ve been a draw. I think he won by one round convincingly, maybe two.”
