“The Real Deal” Serrano [35(26)-1(0)-1] will looks to join Manny Pacquiao and become only one of two boxers to win world titles in seven weight classes when she fights Austria’s Eva Voraberger for the vacant WBO super flyweight world title.
The potentially record-breaking bout will be the Puerto Rican’s first since signing a deal, which has a Katie Taylor fight clause, with DAZN and Matchroom.
Should the fighter who has spent time in MMA emerge victorious it will only add to the glamour of a bout with unified lightweight world champion Taylor, which is proposed for late 2019.
There is a real sense of history about the clash, which unbelievably plays out six weight classes and 25 pounds below Serrano’s last title win – and DiBella stresses Serrano will begin a game changing year for the female element of the sport with a bang.
“This has never been done by a fighter, regardless of gender. I truly believe that 2019 will be an historic year for women in boxing; Amanda Serrano will get it off to an historic start,” said the president of DiBella Sports Entertainment who also has plans to run a card this year entirely comprised of women’s fighta.
“On Friday, January 18, boxing fans will get the opportunity to see Amanda Serrano, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, continue to cement her legacy when she competes for a world title in her seventh weight class.”
Taylor’s management have noted in the past how Serrano has fought predominantly for vacant titles which she has defended sparingly and Voraberger will be the sixth vacant belt she has contested.
The Austrian opponent tasked with stopping Serrano making history looks solid.
DiBella described how “Eva Voraberger is an excellent fighter, one of the world’s best at 115-118-pounds. Her record reflects her excellence.”
“In a span of four-and-a-half months, Amanda will attempt to win a world title six weight classes below the 140-pound title that she won last September.”
